Hurricane Katrina was a killer. Its passing destroyed not only homes and cars and boats, but it took a good chunk out of Gulf Coast people as well. Battering their hopes, shattering their dreams, drowning their already shaky security.
Cherisse Bernard’s family had been lucky. The storm that swept so violently through the south had missed their homes completely. Wind damage was minimal, flooding was nearly nonexistent, the death toll was at zero and unlikely to increase. But how long would that—could that—good fortune possibly last?
Now was the perfect time for Cherisse to make her move. She had three weeks in which to drive down to Louisiana , pack up her widowed mother and sister and get them safely ensconced in her Kansas City town-home before the next big storm blew in.
What Cherisse hadn’t planned on during those next three weeks was falling in love. And not just with a man, for Lonnie Gaspard, Jr. was all that and more, but she also falls in love again with her birthplace. Cherisse learns that her hometown isn’t simply a spot on a map. It’s a people, her people, and the struggle to survive life’s storms is what keeps communities like hers alive and thriving despite the difficulties of living in hurricane country.
An Amazon Review for D.C. Jennings' Thicker than Water:
| A wonderful book of love and decisions made through love February 15, 2009 From the very beginning of this book I've enjoyed feeling as if I'm a part of the "family." D. C. Jennings way of writing makes you feel the pain, sense of loss and happiness of the characters. I'm almost finished and can't wait to see how the wrongs will be righted, the love regenerated and the family brought back together... if that's possible." -Martha A. Cheves, author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat |

Another Amazon Review for Thicker than Water:
| Is blood thicker than water? February 21, 2009 Life on the Triple C ranch was everything Clayton Ryan had every wanted - being married to a beautiful woman, raising a strapping son, breeding and caring for horses, living near family, and beginning a career as an expert rodeo team roper. But ten years into the dream, everything came crashing down. Without warning, Clayton's wife Cecily filed for divorce - no explanation given. He was to leave the ranch immediately. Clay fought to understand what had happened and why he had to leave. But Cecily's only answer was that her feelings for him had changed. So Clay left and vowed not to return. Fifteen years later, Clay's father shows up on his new ranch with news. He tells Clay that his son, now twenty-five years old, means to follow in his father's footsteps and join the rodeo. Furthermore, the boy is engaged to be married soon. Intent on ensuring his son not suffer his same fate, Clay decides to return home and see if indeed blood is thicker than water. In her debut novel, D.C. Jennings creates a heartfelt and heart wrenching story of a family torn apart by secrets initially meant to protect but which only lead to pain. The characters she creates are extremely credible and readers will immediately connect with them - they all have doubts, flaws, desires and conflicting emotions driving them to places they aren't even sure of themselves. Providing further depth to the novel, Jennings' wonderful description of rodeo team roping - heading and heeling - is seamlessly woven into the fabric of the story along with the special bond and care that riders and horses develop and experience. Because of this, I felt I was on the ranch, in the rodeo, and experiencing all of the pain, hope, and desires each of her characters experienced. As I read the final passage, I let out an audible chuckle accompanied by a satisfied grin and nod of approval. Nice work Miss Jennings, nice work. -Todd A. Fonseca, author of The Time Cavern |
